One of the biggest barriers to AED use isn't availability — it's hesitation. Bystanders often freeze because of misconceptions about what using an AED actually requires. Let's clear up the most common myths.
Myth 1: "I Need Medical Training to Use One"
Modern AEDs, such as the HeartSine Samaritan PAD, are specifically engineered for untrained bystanders. Once switched on, the device gives clear step-by-step voice instructions and will not deliver a shock unless it detects a shockable rhythm.
Myth 2: "I Could Shock Someone Who Doesn't Need It"
AEDs continuously analyze the heart's rhythm before allowing any shock. If the rhythm doesn't require defibrillation, the device simply will not charge or deliver one — it is mechanically incapable of shocking someone who doesn't need it.
Myth 3: "I Could Be Sued for Using One"
Good Samaritan protections in most jurisdictions, including here in the UAE, are specifically designed to protect people who act in good faith during an emergency. The greater legal and ethical risk is almost always doing nothing.
Myth 4: "AEDs Are Complicated to Operate"
In practice, using an AED involves three steps: turn it on, attach the pads where shown in the diagram, and follow the voice prompts. The device does the analysis and decision-making.
The Real Barrier Is Access, Not Ability
Anyone can use an AED. The actual limiting factor is almost always whether a device is nearby and ready to go. That's why we offer a Free Demonstration to every organization we work with — seeing the process once removes almost all hesitation.
